Springwood Session. Another tape from the below mentioned black plastic bag Marc recovered. This one had the ribbon split in half and dangling. Some scotch tape and we were back in business. Gotta love analog! This is an interesting snapshot of the creative process circa 97' / 98'. Usually involved finding a place to set up and having at it with words and riffs we'd accumulated. Recording at Springwood Lane, Huntington Village (Macs then girlfriend now wife condo). Place had a spacious basement and I can't recall their being a particular time we had to quit so it worked pretty well for us in those days. Theres a wonderful youthfulness and creative spirit in these simple recordings. A few tunes (Blood, I Love You) worked on for what appears to be the first time or at least 'works in process''. line up: Tim  McAuley - guitar, drums; Marc Hoffman - guitar, drums; Frank Pipolo - vocals; Chris Hoffman - conga. enjoy

Phase 1: Marc was cleaning his garage and came across a wrinkled black plastic bag that contained this tape. Recorded off the sound board at Phase I studio in Farmingdale, NY sometime in the late 90's.
Pretty cool snapshot of us rehearsing for a gig. Some oldies on here (Tioga, No Direction, Row, and Hannah) line up: Tim  McAuley - guitar, drums, backing vocal; Marc Hoffman - guitar, drums; Frank Pipolo - vocals; John Carey - Bass guitar; Rob Manaseri; Electric guitarist. enjoy

March 28, 2015, mellish returned to Rockwood Music Hall Stage 3. This time billed with the wonderful Brendan O'Shea (accompanied by bassist Brian Killeen). mellish joined Brendan on 'Hollow Moon' - a track available on iTunes on the 'In The Light' LP. We resurrected a track called 'Bump in the Road' from 2008 with some nice backing vocals from Tim and Marc. Notable as well is a nice version of 'Away from Here' and 'Meridian'. The Annual Grandview Music House - 2013 - was not the same without Timbo. We made our way through the night with help from special guests/friends Tommy Santoriello, Marlon Sobol, Aaron Sobol and Chris Hoffman. Big thanks to Peg and Joe for the great food and memories.  Line up: Marc Hoffman - guitar, drums; Frank Pipolo - vocals, electric guitar; Tommy Santoriello - Bass, guitar, mandolin; John Pinnella - pedal steel guitar; Marlon Sobol - drums; Aaron Sobol - free style; Chris Hoffman - Conga. enjoy

LIVE LOST: In 2007 mellish played an impromptu set at a local establishment called Elijah Churchill's Public House. Until recently we were unaware that the night was recorded. The night represents an interesting cross section of music spanning from very early material to cuts that we were still mixing for the Wiser Eye LP. Some of these were still evolving in the album sessions - 2007 is a good example. Line up: Marc Hoffman - guitar, drums; Tim McAuley - guitar, drums, backing vocals; John Carey - Bass; Frank Pipolo - vocals, banjo, harmonica. enjoy

Live at Rockwood Music Hall: mellish played Rockwood Music Hall in the East Village September 13th. A big thanks to Michael Brunnock for making the gig possible. We split the night with Michael who started things off in a wonderful way with new material. (link to view new video and Vanity Fair article). We recorded using DAW MultiTrack on iPhone 5 - thanks to Mary. Stage 3 with its red walls and candle light was a warm and fitting place for us to play - the sound/acoustics were perfect. Line up: Marc Hoffman - guitar, backing vocals, Conga; Tim McAuley - guitar, piano, backing vocals; John Pinnella - pedal steel guitar; Frank Pipolo - vocals, guitar; Michael Brunnock - vocal , guitar (Sensation, Birds). enjoy

Bru na bo: mellish was back in Northport on July 19th performing at Bru na Bo. Joining us that night was Christina Ahlsen on cello.  Christina added a warm tone to the evening which worked well with a lot of our new material. The place was at capacity. It was also blisteringly hot coming off a 10 day heat wave in NY. If you listen you'll hear the old air conditioning unit humming in the background. Our friend and Italian Academy Award Winner Michael Brunnock opened up the night for us and joined us for a few numbers. A very enjoyable night. Line up: Marc Hoffman - guitar, backing vocals, Conga/ Tim McAuley - guitar, backing vocals, conga/ John Carey - stand up bass - John Pinnella - pedal steel guitar/ Christina Ahlsen - cello/ Frank Pipolo - vocals, guitar, harmonica.  Brú na Bó

Living Room: A few tracks captured while rehearsing in July 2013. Featuring Christina Ahlsen on Cello, John Pinnella on Dobro and John Carey on stand up base. Notable is a good recording of 'The Game'.
Line up: Marc Hoffman - guitar, backing vocals, Conga/ Tim McAuley - guitar, backing vocals, conga/ John Carey - stand up bass - John Pinnella - Dobro/ Christina Ahlsen - cello/ Frank Pipolo - vocals, guitar, harmonica. enjoy

Live at Harvest: This is a series of tracks we recorded at Harvest during the the 4th Annual Montauk Music Festival in Montauk NY. They were recorded on an iPhone 5 using DAW multi-track. The quality is not bad.Our friends Brendan O'Shea and Michael Brunnock joined us for a few songs. John Pinnella accompanied us on pedal steel. John has a wonderfully delicate touch which adds a subtle but unmistakable texture to our music.  All and all a very wonderful Friday and Saturday Night. There are plenty of tunes here so enjoy. Line up: Marc Hoffman - guitar, backing vocals, Conga/ Tim McAuley - guitar, backing vocals, conga/ John Pinnella - pedal steel guitar/ Frank Pipolo - vocals, guitar, mandolin, harmonica. (Michael Brunnock - guitar, vocal/ Brendan O'Shea - Guitar and vocal where indicated) enjoy

Grandview Music House: Recorded December 2012 and December 2010 at the Annual Grandview Street Christmas Party. Interesting people, plenty of food and spirits and genuine appreciation of our tunes. We'll take that mix any day of the week! Line up: Marc Hoffman - guitar, backing vocals, drums/ Tim McAuley - guitar, backing vocals, drums/ John Carey - bass - John Pinnella - pedal steel guitar/ Frank Pipolo - vocals, guitar, harmonica.

Montauk Sessions version 3: Each year Marc, Tim and I head to Montauk in the fall for a 2 day musical retreat of sorts. We approach these sessions pretty seriously as they represent the only significant stretch of time we have each year to create. Here is the latest installment completed in November of 2012. We're proud of these tracks - some are unlike anything we've done but all have that stripped down feel - acoustic guitars, a few well positioned mic's a great sounding room (thx Dan, Sue, Margaret, and Joe). Line up: Marc Hoffman - guitar, backing vocals/ Tim McAuley - guitar, backing vocals/ Frank Pipolo - vocals, guitar.

Montauk Sessions version 2: Here you will find Montauk Sessions 2010. Featured are some nice tracks and the first integration of an ebo on a mellish tune called 'Nothings New'. There are a few notable renditions of songs such as Neil Young s 'Birds' and a tuned called Gypsy written about a good friend of ours that passed away. Line up: Marc Hoffman - guitar, backing vocals/ Tim McAuley - guitar, backing vocals/ Frank Pipolo - vocals, guitar, Dobro  harmonica. enjoy

Montauk Sessions version 1:This collection of tracks represents our first trip to Montauk to record. In some respects its one of my favorite MTK sessions. It was a productive weekend in that it produced some numbers we still play frequently including - 'Maybe Too Late', Tom Petty's 'You Got Lucky', 'A Trip' and 'To Breath'. Line up: Marc Hoffman - guitar, backing vocals/ Tim McAuley - guitar, backing vocals/ Frank Pipolo - vocals, guitar, harmonica. enjoy

Live at the Scratcher: Our dear friend Brendan O'Shea invited us out to play at the Scratcher, 209 E 5th St (between Cooper Sq & 2nd Ave) - the venue that he tends and plays occasionally as well. Marc was not able to attend so Tim and I played with me occasionally supporting Tim on guitar. We were accompanied by Megan Franchi on a tune called 123 featuring Tim on vocals and on a nice version of Neil Young's 'Birds'.  Line up: Tim McAuley - guitar, backing vocals/ Frank Pipolo - vocals, guitar, harmonica. (Megan Franchi - vocals where indicated)  enjoy

Huntington Social: So good bye Huntington Social - We will miss you! A very trendy establishment overlooking downtown Huntington Village, the Huntington Social was a place we played a few times and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. Thanks to John J and Chris for making it possible and for all the great food and spirits. Available here is one tune that we were able to record via Marc's phone. The sound quality is not great but it does give a good feel for what it was like to play there, the great crowds and the sound. This track is a called Meridian. It will be featured on our next full length album coming out in 2014. Line up: Marc Hoffman - guitar, backing vocals, drums/ Tim McAuley - guitar, backing vocals, drums/ John Carey - bass / John Pinnella - pedal steel guitar/ Frank Pipolo - vocals. enjoy

Bru na bo - 2010: Our dear friend Jack Reidy -builder/artist/merchant -runs an establishment called Bru Na Bo in Northport Village,NY. There he sells one of a kind home goods, furniture, art work etc. Certain nights he converts Bru into an eclectic live music venue where the likes of Mick FlanneryMichael BrunnockBrendan O'Shea and other Irish singer song writers have come to play. Mellish has been invited to play a few times. This recording is from 2010 and features my favorite version of 'Wildflowers' - a tune we wrote 6 or 7 years earlier that was resurrected right around the time of this show. Marc's solo mid way through provides a gentle asterisk. We always enjoy ourselve. Mostly because Jack does such an effective job of reminding folks that they are there to listen. He's done such a masterful job of this, that some local folks refer to Jack as simply -  'shutthefucup' pronounced (Shut-The-Fuck-Up). Line up: Marc Hoffman - guitar, backing vocals, drums/ Tim McAuley - guitar, backing vocals, drums/ John Carey - bass / Frank Pipolo - vocals, guitar, harmonica. enjoy

Wiser Eye: Wiser Eye was recorded at Gigantic Studios in SoHo NYC. Joe Pip was along with us that fateful day. We learned a heck of lot that day about what goes into capturing sound. We mixed the album in Brooklyn for the better part of a year and released it in 2008. We are proud of every track here. It is available on iTunes as well as all over the internet. Line up: Marc Hoffman - guitar, backing vocals, drums/ Tim McAuley - guitar, backing vocals, drums, piano/ John Carey - bass, backing vocals / Matt Wilcox - keys/ Jack Divine - guitar, banjo/ Dave Eggar - cello/ Frank Pipolo - vocals, harmonica.
enjoy

The Bayville Sessions: During the process of mixing Wiser Eye Tim and I headed out to Marc’s place in Bayville, NY a few times. One evening was especially productive and produced a few tracks that we liked so much we almost changed the Wiser Sessions mid-stream to incorporate them. Unfortunately that never happened and these tracks fell into obscurity – although we do play them from time to time. These are raw first takes but still nice. Line up: Marc Hoffman - guitar/ Tim McAuley - guitar/ Frank Pipolo - vocals, guitar. enjoy

Rudder: Released in 2002, Rudder is a collection of tracks, most of which were recorded at Tim's old house (Attic and Basement). Notable here are a few raw takes of tunes that found their way onto Wiser Eye. Was a heavy time for me coming off of being pretty ill with an immune disease attacking my kidneys. I have a vivid memory of recording 'Park' after having several pints. Jack Reidy, Tim and I returned to Tim's basement apartment. Tim laid down some slide and off we went, sipping Belgian beer. Line up: Marc Hoffman - guitar/ Tim McAuley - guitar, piano, backing vocals, drums/ Frank Pipolo - vocals, guitar. enjoy

Chivatos: Chivatos was recorded by our friend Dema - live in his kitchen and dining room in Huntington Station - not far from the train station up a side street. Dema was/is a very cool person to work with and genuinely loved our stuff. His roommate and friends were interesting and if my memory serves me we had a jam session's in his basement with Dema on drums. We were working on getting this one done in time for a radio appearance in Rochester NY. Our good friend Brian Bailey (Bails) was the DJ of a local public radio station. Bails interviewed us and played these tunes in-between segments. A great experience and a fun road trip. We were never able to mix this one properly but it does have some great numbers that we still play today. Line up: Marc Hoffman - guitar, drums/ Tim McAuley - guitar, drums/John Carey - bass/ Frank Pipolo - vocals. enjoy

Chivatos Sessions:
ION deck transfer from analog tape: Preparing to record Chivatos we often rehearsed at Marc and Karyn's apartment on Old Country Road in Melville. During this period a clever gentlemen named John Heagle was part of mellish - an interesting guy and a great guitarist. Some of these feature Heagle some just the 4 of us. So A handful of tunes we were working on for the Chivatos album as well as a few numbers we often did live at that time.  Line up: Marc Hoffman - guitar, drums/ Tim McAuley - guitar, drums/ John Carey - bass/ John Heagle - guitar/ Frank Pipolo - vocals. UPDATED 6/27
enjoy

Mellish: Although there was a compilation that circulated prior to this called ‘Help’, this is the first official album we cut - recorded in Deer Park at Yogi Studios with our friend Frank Belushi and released in 1999. The entire album was done in 2 afternoons. The recording was done on a  reel-to-reel machine and then transferred to DAT. If I remember correctly John Carey brought along a friend who sat quietly in the corner listening. I remember wondering if she hated us because her expression was hard to read. Either way it served to motivate a good performance I suppose. Notable here are some early numbers like ‘Countryside’, ‘Breeze Way’, ‘Tioga’ and ‘Understand’. A baby Hannah Pipolo can be heard on 'Sunshine' unfolding a picture she drew for us. Enjoy. Line up: Marc Hoffman - guitar, drums/ Tim McAuley - guitar, drums/ John Carey - bass/ Rob Manaceri - guitar/ Frank Pipolo - vocals, harmonica. enjoy

Sweet Mellish: Assembled here are some rare and alternate versions of tracks. More will be added here gradually. '123' is a song Tim wrote last year and features Tim on vocal with me backing him. There are also a handful of experiments and instrumentals.  Line up: Marc Hoffman - guitar, drums/ Tim McAuley - guitar, drums/ Frank Pipolo - vocals. enjoy

The Marty & Betty Sessions:
ION deck transfer from analog tape: On occasion mellish would set up in Marty and Betty Diviney's den in their home in Huntington. A very nice couple and the parents of Peg, my sister (in law). Peg and Joe were living there as they saved for a home. Marty and Betty traveled quite a bit back then and it was on those occasions that mellish would be invited to come by. We'd fill the room with 20 or so friends and play all night. This is an analog recording of 4 tunes captured on a 4 track recorder. Its serves as a good snapshot of where we were at in 1998. Sound quality is not bad.  Line up: Marc Hoffman - guitar, drums/ Tim McAuley - guitar, drums/ John Carey - bass/ Frank Pipolo - vocals. enjoy

Help:
ION deck transfer from analog tape: I Purchased an ION tape deck which transfers analog to digital for manipulation. Very useful tool for us as much of our earlier stuff is buried on old Maxell tapes. I recently resurrected the lone Maxell that features the origins of mellish. Most of these were done in the time period between 1995-1997. The track 'That's the way' represents the first time we played together. Tim had heard some stuff Marc and I had recorded on a primitive tape recorder and liked it. He asked us to come by one night -we did. A few notable tracks - Inspired, Guerrilla and Rasputin. All very raw material and sound quality is not the best. These were tunes we played regularly back in 97'. Now that we have the device I will attempt to resurrect some other worthy material - possibly some live stuff from Mercury etc...Enjoy.  Line up: Marc Hoffman - guitar, drums/ Tim McAuley - guitar, drums/ John Carey - bass/ Frank Pipolo - vocals, harmonica/ (Jon Johnnnidis - guitar on 'Thats the Way'). enjoy

Analog:
ION deck transfer from analog tape: As mentioned above the ION has proved useful. Here are some tracks that were buried on cassettes, stored in an old smelly gym bag (you'll get the symbolism once you hear them). Marc had taken the time to triage these way back about 8 years ago but we were never able to make sense of them till now. I've only listed stuff I feel is worthy of listening to - although this is subjective. When I have some time to burn i'll add some more. Line up: Marc Hoffman - guitar, drums/ Tim McAuley - guitar, drums/ John Carey - bass/ Frank Pipolo - vocals, harmonica. enjoy

A little about us
mellish has been making music for quite some time - originally forming in 1995. We evolved much the same way most bands do. We started out playing for friends and local parties and shortly graduated to paying gigs. Huntington Village gave way to New York City gigs which we enjoy very much. We've been fortunate to play The Mercury Lounge, Arlene Grocery, Meow Mix, Opium Den, The Bitter End  and recently Rockwood Music Hall. The past few years we've played a lot less due to life's persistent calling. We like to think we make those infrequent gigs very special.

We've always meshed well. One of us always seems to have a response to where the other is attempting to go creatively. We're blessed in that music happens to us very naturally - Its unforced. There are definite influences to our sound. We like to think we are influenced by a lifetime of listening intently. We strive to keep the material fresh. Although we don’t get the opportunity to work as much as we'd like - there is a definite evolution that takes place. We're proud of what we've been able to create over the years. Thanks for listening!

Help with downloading
By clicking on the link at the end of each description you will be taken to a 'Mediafire' window. Here, by clicking on any given track you will be presented with the option to listen or download. You can also select the little box above all the tracks and it will select all the tunes and present the option to download all the tracks. Worth noting as it beats selecting and downloading each individual track one by one. If you choose to download, make sure you download to a location that you can easily upload to your favorite mp3 player. For instance if you are planning on loading into iTunes, then download the files somewhere where you can easily upload them e.g. 'My Music/mellish'. In iTunes select 'File/Add Files To Library'. This will allow you to navigate to the correct folder and upload the files.
